The Southern Cross Country League is a series of 6 cross country races held on a Sunday (11am start) from October to March, involving over 25 local running clubs. Courses are a mixture of woodland trails and parkland, usually 4 to 5 miles in length and organised by some of the clubs in the league, including our own race at QE Country Park in November (cakes and marshals needed!).
Races are free to enter, and are very relaxed and social. No pre-entry needed, just turn up to take part but make sure you race in a Joggers top (league rules). There is tea and cakes afterwards (for a small contribution of £2).
There are usually between 400 and 500 runners taking part, and these events are open to club runners only – hence the club top requirement. Men and women compete in the same race with the first 5 men and first 3 women from each club scoring points. All abilities take part and even non-scorers can affect the result by getting ahead of scorers from other clubs.
To help make it more sociable, anyone who is super quick is prevented from entering. This is defined for women as faster than 6′ 00″ per mile over a distance of 5 miles or more in races in the year preceding the first race. For the men it’s 5′ 30″ per mile.
